Note - the beginning is rather a tiny bit boring,
but will return later and skip ahead. Maybe it
gets alot more interesting! : )

      Another Note:

For some reason, Michael Moore is a bit of a hero.
He is going against those in power - WOW, and
those in power are not so very nice. I wonder how
      he gets away with it?

One would think he gets some rather pointed emails.
His bravery impresses me. I worry for him - he seems
      to be a bit overweight.

It's always amazing to me when people really go
out on a limb against the current winds of power
and dare to speak their peace openly and candidly.
      Without reservation!

      : )

        love michael moore

he is a hero, a hero to working men and women.

he is a champion of the middle class, and even more importantly the poor.

the poor never have a voice in this country, so its good to see someone taking a stand against the wealthy fat cats that could give a fuck all about the poor.

my favorite movie by michael moore will always be Sicko because of the need for universal healthcare for all americans. its sad that the united states has soo much money but when it comes to universal healthcare the republicans say there isnt money for it.

Amazing. Thank you, cdin. (And thanks for the Palin video post.)

Loves, I hear Sicko was his best. I've only seen part of it -- parts of it were shown on TV here. The bit about Britain is of course only partial, and he chose a good hospital, though not our very best; but it is not in any way fake.

One worrying thing, and there are several sources for this, is that as the financial crisis hits, some in the US are simply not seeing their doctor because they haven't the money. (I know there were already people who didn't do that.)

            Hi Clemmati!

Are you in Great Britain? Do you have socialized medicine, and take care of
            the indigent?

Here, it IS very worrying about medical insurance. So many of us do not have
any, so if we get very sick, we can only to an emergency room in a government
sponsored hospital where the staff are overworked and probably very
            unsympathetic with their nonpaying patients.

The poor are not famous for their graciousness, patience and convivial moods.
Rather, they are stressed, wounded, possibly defensive, and very down hearted...
this makes it even more difficult for already overwhelmed staff.

These hospitals tend to give very very minimal care and no serious operations -
result - people just die. They die in the street, they die at home.

It's so heartbreaking, and it's wrong.

When only the rich and the well insured can get care, there is a grave injustice.

Just the other day, there was the story of the little boy who needed a liver, but
didn't have the money for the operation. Yes, he died soon afterwards.

He died because his parents, family didn't have insurance, didn't have money...

Insurance isn't always helpful here in the US either. Deductibles can be too
            high, services too limited.

If you don't have the money, you can't expect good treatment unless miracles
            happen.

Have you noticed that miracles are hard to come by??

            : / Sigh!

Hello Moose, yes, I am in Britain (and I am a Brit, though my mother was born in the US) and yes we have 'socialized medicine' and I support it. More or less everybody here supports it; all the main political parties here support it. And We try to take care of the indigent; though there are some soup kitchens here, they are far fewer than in the US and simply not so badly needed; and the local homeless people are either registered with the same kind of NHS primary care doctor as I am and also get the same secondary care, or have been unable to register with such a doctor, wronglt -- in that case, in my city, they can sign up with a special primary care practice. Here's a piece about what happens when they don't or can't sign up

            http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2550025.stm

            >So many of us do not have
            >any, so if we get very sick, we can only to an emergency room in a government
            >sponsored hospital

I know. A friend of a friend in California put off going to a doctor because she was worried about money (she was just above the level for Medicaid), by the time she went it was almost too late and she died. Here the poor will go to their doctor immediately.

            >the little boy who needed a liver, but
            >didn't have the money for the operation.

that really stinks; here transplants are carried out on the NHS and there's a Europe-wide organ register, with priority on the basis of medical need. (Some transplants are carried out privately, though.

Medical care is just too important to be left to the insurance industry and the 'free market'.

Johnny Depp's daughter was treated at this national health/socialised hospital -- he would probably have had to pay even though it was an emergency --

he gave them millions afterwards, which is great

Wow - Great Britain is really progressive ahead of the US. It's mindboggling how behind the times we are. So many things right with the US, so many things wrong.

The US really is unusual among the richer Western countries in not having universal health care of some kind. (Yes there are a lot of things right with the US!)
